CPTG – What’s the difference?

CPTG – Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils

Ninety-eight percent of essential oils produced today are used in the food and flavoring and the perfume/cosmetics industries – generally known as ‘food grade’ and ‘perfume grade’ oils respectively.

Those essential oils used in the food and flavoring industry are heavily adulterated and have been manipulated to make a consistent product revealing the same flavor that’s expected time and again in the industry.

The quality of essential oils used by perfumers may smell great but don’t necessarily have the constituents for therapeutic aromatherapy. These EOs are generally adulterated and diluted – often with synthetic ingredients. The intention for both the food and perfume industries is to achieve a ‘certain’ taste or smell the manufacturer needs or wants.

Only about two percent of the essential oils produced today are of the highest quality and can be considered ‘Therapeutic Grade.’ These pure oils retain their true plant essences and are derived from singular plant species. They are not adulterated in any way.

dōTerra’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils are 100% pure natural aromatic compounds carefully extracted from plants. They do not contain fillers or artificial ingredients that would dilute their active qualities. Proper extraction and quality control methods also ensure that dōTerra’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils are free of any contaminants such as pesticides or other chemical residues. In addition to being 100% pure and natural, dōTerra’s Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils are subjected to further quality testing that ensures the correct composition of the active natural compounds found in each oil. doTerra’s global network of leading essential oil chemists and growers select plant species, grown in ideal environments, carefully harvested at the right time, and skillfully extracted by experienced distillers to ensure essential oil extracts of consistent and powerful potency.

Below is a chart that shows the types of Essential Oils that are common in the industry. The first is “Synthetic”; which is used in the Perfume and Industrial industry. These oils are made up of synthetic compounds or are chemically engineered. This makes up the biggest part of the Essential Oils sold today. The second is “Food Grade”; these oils are used in the food industry. For an Essential Oil to be used in the food industry it only has to pass as “Generally Recognized as Safe”, commonly known as the GRAS Standard. The third is Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils. These can be purchased in dollar stores, body and bath stores, health stores and more. For many years, this has been the highest standard of oils in the market.

Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils go through a testing process called Gas Chromatography. Most reputable companies in the Essential Oil industry conduct this test. This test checks and insures that the oil contains the correct compounds; however, it does not determine if the oil contains any impurities, pesticides or other chemicals. The small dot in the center is CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade®. This is the highest standard of Essential Oils on the market today. All dōTerra Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® Essential Oils are third party tested. The first test is the Gas Chromatography and the second is Mass Spectrometry. The Mass Spectrometry test checks all the compounds in the oil and also checks for pesticides or any other impurities that may be present in the oil. dōTerra Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® Essential Oils are guaranteed to be 100% pure, natural and free of synthetic compounds or contaminates.

Try this at home: Compare the smell of dōTERRA’s 100% lavender essential oil to another lavender oil or product in your home. If your product’s fragrance is overbearing in any one note it may contain synthetic chemical substitutes. A 100% pure therapeutic-grade essential oil should have a balanced, broad fragrance profile and should smell crystal clean.  Now, compare the feel of your product to dōTERRA’s essential oil. A pure essential oil should not feel slick or oily but rather absorb cleanly and completely into your skin.
